Somali is the Cushitic language that I am most familiar with other than afaan Oromoo. I am by no means fluent, but my understanding is pretty good. Oromiffa af Soomaali by Badal W. Kariye, belongs to the realm of afaan Oromoo and non-European and non-Amharic language books. This is a very small group of books and this is one of my only examples. Obviously, this one, and most of the ones I have seen are self published. This can lead to odd pricing on Amazon with their algorithm. Oromiffa af Soomaali was on the reasonable side this time. I would like to see the almost $3000 Arabic and afaan Oromoo dictionary.
To be honest there isn’t a lot to work with in this book. It is mostly just word lists and the phrase translation. It is broken down into roughly topical lessons, but without a teacher there is not a lot to entice the student to make progress. Other than the introduction, which is fully in both languages, there is nothing to help a student make progress with the material. Still, I am relatively happy to have seen it as I approve of more books that have afaan Oromoo and less commonly taught languages. I have only started going through this, but it is interesting so far. My Somali speaking friends are not here now so it is mostly on my own with my okay-ish Somali.
Besides minor spelling mistakes, there isn’t anything odd in the afaan Oromoo section. Maybe, I have a single book that is afaan Oromoo, Amharic, English, and Arabic. I also have a fair amount of Islamic books that are afaan Oromoo and Arabic, but none are textbooks or guides for learning the language. I am a big fan of more books that connect afaan Oromoo to languages outside Europe and hope to see more of these in the future.
