The first selection in the Oromo Newspaper Reader is about a sheep giving birth to six lambs. This is a great book as I said, as every single word is explained in depth. For me now it is relatively easy but a beginner might be wondering why they see lamaa being used in a sentence rather than lama the word they know means two. The wordlist for each selection explains that lamaa is the genitive form of the word lama and would mean something like “of two.”
This helpfulness is throughout the book and explains where in the grammar sketch you can find information about the different grammar points you see in the selection. You see the word qabeenyumaan but not make the connection that is is from the root qab– (meaning to have or to own), it then is combined with a ending –eenya (meaning an abstract noun with -ness vibes) and sees some vowel loss, while another ending –ummaa (also meaning -ness for collective nouns is added). This creates a word that means something like “the ownership of.”
Bonus points for also pointing out how to pronounce years that have obviously been written with numbers. It is clumsy in writing but a learner may not understand how to say numbers when met with a year.
